Malka Dubrawsky is an artist and mama from Texas. She hand dyes cotton fabric which she then uses to create quilts, pillows, coaster and bags. She also sells her hand dyed and batiked fabric. Check out her Etsy shop and her blog! Her colorful artwork really cheers me, and she takes beautiful photographs to boot!
I struggle with patterned fabric in my own projects and tend to use solid colors of cotton or linen (most of them scrap from a local seamstress, thereby, limiting my palette even further). I guess I just find it difficult to create a good balance where the pattern doesn’t dominate the overall image or design of the quilt. What I love about Malka’s hand dyed fabric is that it is open for transformation. The patterns are irregular and basic–leaving lots of room for either the embellishment of the pattern or pushing the pattern to fit the overall design of the quilt. Here are some examples of her work (all the copyright of Malka Dubrawsky):

Diamond Pillow 16X16″

The quilt below is made from commercial fabric that has been over-dyed or bleached to create the circles. I really love this quilt…love, love, love it!

Hey -
I wanted to thank you for turning me on to etsy. I love it! I’ve already ordered prezzies for my mom and myself. And I love your birds! They rock.
Thanks for shopping Etsy, Megan! There is some awesome stuff out there–most of my presents are coming for fellow Etsians, too!
