“Rabbit rabbit white rabbit” is a common superstition, held particularly among children. The most common modern version states that a person should say “rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit” upon waking on the first day of each new month, and on doing so will receive good luck for the remainder of that month.”

I remember hearing a professor mention that she would say “Rabbit, Rabbit” on the first day of the month for good luck. She was trying to get pregnant at the time, so I thought it had to do about fertility. Another part of the tale was that you had to say “Hare, Hare” on the last day of the month, too. I also have a couple of friends who had a band they called, “Rabbit, Rabbit.” Has anyone else heard of this superstition?
I recently made this small art quilt for my mom’s 81 (holy cow!) birthday. (In case your doing the math, she had me at 47! Can you believe it?! I can barely keep up with Mogs at 33.) I ironed interfacing onto the white cotton, cut out my rabbit shapes and sewed them on to the quilt square with the embroidered stitches. I was inspired by the animal themed matchbook covers in this book. I like that the fraying of the fabric looks like fur. As you can see, I was trying out my scalloped edge stitch on my sewing machine…I do think I got it out of my system.

Rabbit, Rabbit to everyone!

The only time I’ve heard of that superstition is from you. Maybe I should ask more people about it.
Your mom’s 81! Tell her Happy Birthday for me. I still call myself, “A piggy whistle” when I overeat. She called me that once and it stuck.
I haven’t heard of this superstition but I’m sure my kids would love it. I’ll tell them about it…
I love your art quilt and those rabbits! The stitching sets off the design as does the frayed edges.
I can’t even imagine having a child at 47!! I had my son at 28 and I remember the constant fatigue… I surely couldn’t do it now at my “young” age of 39!
